When spring showers are in the vicinity, it’s a great opportunity to create a cozy indoor day with the grandkids. Here are three ideas to have some fun and make some memories.

1. Bake something simple.
Cooking together doesn’t mean you have to pull out all the stops. Simple, hands-on recipes with shorter steps allow kids to track their progress in ways that align with their development. Being creative in the kitchen offers kiddos a safe space to build confidence — and be messy. Cookies, muffins, and banana breads are all great options, or choose a family favorite recipe to create together.

2. Hot chocolate bar
When it’s chilly and wet outside, make something warm and tasty inside with a hot chocolate bar. Set out different marshmallows, whipped cream, cinnamon, chocolate chips, sprinkles, and even gummy bears, and let kids experiment with flavors. Use smaller cups for more mixtures. Then, take a moment to rate your favorites and discuss why you enjoyed them.
3. Journal video project
Get your tech-savvy grandkid to set up a video interview. Have kids come up with a list of five questions to ask you, such as: What was your favorite toy when you were little? What’s a funny family story you love? Then, pick a spot to record your answers with your phone. Take your time and tell your story. Not only does this build connection and awareness of family history, it also becomes a keepsake.
No matter which activity you choose, the true magic of a rainy afternoon isn’t found in the perfect recipe or a high-tech video, but in the simple, undivided attention you share with one another.
