The wait is over. Spring is officially here, and with it comes our favorite season: Derby! Have fun with the Derby festivities, and check out art fairs and family-friendly events happening all April here in Louisville.
Family-friendly
Gather the grands for some Easter fun at the Louisville Zoo’s Safari Eggventure, running March 14–April 12. This scavenger hunt throughout the zoo combines activities like finding hidden eggs, answering trivia, and solving fun challenges. Bonus prizes are zoo memberships and plush animals. This is great for the littles and elementary school-age kids.
If you need a break from the Ohio Valley allergy season, one popular indoor activity is sure to be Disney on Ice. Running April 10-12 at the Yum! Center, the show will feature Disney favorites like Mickey, princesses, heroes from Toy Story and Aladdin, and more.

Don’t miss the Pegasus Parade happening April 26. This beloved tradition features themed floats, bands, and giant inflatable characters. The parade starts at 3pm and runs for about two hours. It starts downtown and marches west along Broadway for 17 blocks, from Campbell Street to 9th Street.
More Derby fun
I don’t need to tell locals which Derby celebration is first because it’s been a tradition since 1991. Thunder Over Louisville will fill the sky over the Ohio River with its amazing air show and fireworks on Saturday, April 18. Thunder can be viewed from both sides of the river, and you can check out viewing packages at places like the Kentucky Science Center and Slugger Field.
The Great BalloonFest is another Derby staple. See the hot air balloons light up the evening at the Great Balloon Glow April 24-25 at Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront. Then, you have two opportunities to watch them race, on Friday or Saturday mornings at Bowman Field.
Artful activities

Spend a day strolling through tree-covered streets and looking at gorgeous artwork at the annual Cherokee Triangle Art Fair, a free juried art festival April 25-26. Choose a new handmade painting or sculpture for your home — or find great jewelry for a Mother’s Day gift (wink, wink).
The Louisville Water Lantern Festival is April 29 at 6pm. Held at Waterfront Park, this beautiful event will feature food trucks, music, and thousands of lanterns on the water. Oh, and not to worry, all lanterns are made from sustainable materials.
