Truly, May needs no introduction in Louisville. The Derby starts off the month with a tradition that has been around for more than 150 years. Older than the invention of the light bulb, and slightly younger than blue jeans, Derby festivities mean home, pie, and horses to many of us here in Kentucky. But don’t worry, the Derby isn’t the only fun event happening in May.
Derby Time
Kentucky natives know all about the Kentucky Oaks starting on May 1. Gates open at 10am, and the first race starts at 12:30pm. This, of course, is the lead-up to the one and only “fastest two minutes in sports”—the Derby.
The 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby takes place on May 2, 2026. Louisville’s finest and most historic event is here, so stock up on your mint julep mixes and racing forms for a start time of 6:57pm as our favorite jockeys, trainers, and Thoroughbreds start their Triple Crown journey.

Family-Friendly Fun
After the Derby is over, a nice family breakfast might just be what you need to recover. Round up the grandkids (ages 4-18) for Breakfast With The Beasts happening Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 31 at the Louisville Zoo. Advanced ticket purchase is required, and this includes a hot breakfast, parking, and admission to the zoo. Enjoy your waffles near animal exhibits, and discuss any animal-related questions you may have with their knowledgeable staff.
Don’t forget the best minor-league baseball team in the ‘Ville, the Louisville Bats. A wonderful way to spend an afternoon or evening, games begin on May 5 at selected times. For you sweet lovers out there, May 15 is Dessert Day at the park, honoring National Chocolate Chip Day. Come and eat all the desserts, presented by Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Concert and Markets
For those who love a good concert, Poorcastle is happening this May. This three-day independent music festival supports local musicians and youth-based music organizations. Happening at Jubilee Field on Burnett Avenue on May 15-18, be sure to check out the local food, music, vendors, and more!
The local Farmers’ Markets are back! Get into the swing of the warmer weather, with a good market offering local produce, meats, and arts and crafts. Be sure to check out the St. Matthew’s farmers market, starting on May 9, the Bardstown Road Farmers Market, on Saturdays from 9-noon, and the Crescent Hill Farmers Market starts May 15 from 3-6pm.
May has fantastic events to get you in the mood for summer! It’s just around the corner!

P.S. As spring moves forward and the weather gets warmer, make and serve A Piece Of Cake at your next gathering.
